A Sunday evening poem: Accept and Flow to Grace

March 31, 2019 Leave a comment

I’ve been meditating on this for the past few weeks; how do we get to that state of Grace? Actually I think I’ve been working on this for most of my life! And last year, 2018, my word for the year was “flow.” For 2019 my word is “grace.”

Maybe I’m finally putting things together! In the Chinese Medicine philosophy and approach the Five Elements govern a lot about who we are, how we live and how our health can be influenced. My Element, my constitution is Wood. The virtues of Wood are clarity, vision, creativity. The primary emotion is anger. And the process to transform anger into the virtues of Wood is Forgiveness!

Another factor in “putting things together” is my fingerprints. Without getting into the details of hand and fingerprint analysis I am in the “school of love” for this lifetime. So, these words, acceptance, flow, grace and love are important to me; I wrote this poem with these key words in mind:

Accept and Flow to Grace

Acceptance:
The magic act,
True magic,
No slight of hand,
No deceit,
Only the pure act:
Acceptance.

Forgiveness:
The magic act
Powering acceptance;
Forgive self,
Forgive Self,
Forgive him,
Forgive them,
They know not;
Only the pure act:
Forgiveness.

Flow:
The magic state,
Birthing with acceptance,
Breathing with forgiveness,
Moving through what is
Only the pure state:
Flow.

Grace:
The true magic,
Flowing from the heart,
Flowing from the mind,
Flowing from Cosmos,
Flowing from Divine;
The only pure Magic:
Grace.

Love:
The True Magic,
The germ of acceptance,
The pith of forgiveness,
The shell of flow,
The seed of Grace;
Only the pure Magic
Grows Love.

Can We Afford Peace? (A Musing on 9/11)

September 11, 2018 Leave a comment

Today I’m going to let this poem speak for itself.

Can We Afford Peace?
(A Musing on 9/11)

Remember the day the towers came down,
A glancing blow on the Potomac,
A plowed field in Pennsylvania.
Remember – Another “day of infamy.”

We memorialize this day each year
To burn the images, the losses, the audacity
A little deeper in the Soul of America.
We stir and restir the anger, the hate,

The fear of the other, brown people, Islam.
But do we remember to forgive?
Our sovereignty was attacked on 9/11;
Innocent trust in invincibility lost.

There is no sovereignty without forgiveness.
It is a hollow fate carved out by hate.
But we remember and stir to keep
The embers of revenge alive.

There is too much profit in war, revenge;
Too much profit for the powers:
We can’t afford peace. Forgiveness?
It may lead to peace – and loss!

FRIDAY’S POEM FROM “RHYTHMS AND CYCLES” – Love, Forgiveness, Gratitude

October 3, 2014 Leave a comment

I wrote today’s poem in early 2013 as a way to live that year, life. There is a cycling about this poem of circles, hinges and turnings. And with faith there is a spiraling that powers the evolution of consciousness. There may be other acts that we, as humans, need to live by, but for me these are three of the most important ones:

Love, Forgiveness, Gratitude

Three acts to live by:

Love, where it all begins
And ends.
The circle of everything
Turns with the tides
As the Moon loves down.

Forgiveness, in the middle,
The hinge.
It all turns on this act,
Swinging ‘round and ‘round
As a gateless gate for passage.

Gratitude, the end,
No end.
Turning about the center
Where it All rests
As we give thanks and praise.

Love, Forgiveness, Gratitude:
Grace.

FRIDAY’S POEM FROM “RHYTHMS AND CYCLES” – The Future is Now

September 12, 2014 Leave a comment

Today’s poem is a reprise from a few months ago. It comes to mind as we look toward Rosemary’s Possibilities Playshop next week. In this event we use our intuitive skills to “plan forward” toward our “bodacious wish” for the future. How does the future and all our planning (we in the west or so good about planning!) relate to the practice of being present, living now? This poem gets at that cycle and enigma of time.

The Future is Now

If the future is now
Dreams are now.
This is Dream Time.

And is the past now?
Forgiveness is now.
This is the lesson.

Now is only now,
Past time, Dream Time,
All one now.

MONDAY’S POEM: Anger

September 1, 2014 Leave a comment

Life is so interesting! Last week I finished a summer series of Qigong classes with the theme: “Transforming Emotions to Virtues.” I followed the Five-Element scheme so deeply rooted in Chinese approaches to life and health. And my first class several weeks ago was on the Wood Element and transforming Anger to Creativity through Forgiveness.

Today, as I searched through my archives and journals for a “Monday Poem” I came across this one I wrote in February 2010.  This was a few years before I began my intense practice of Qigong and study of the Five Elements! But even then I knew how to transform Anger. And yes, my predominant element is Wood!

Anger

It’s easy:
Just fear the mistakes,
Fear failure.
How does that feel?

Anger is a defense.
Anger trumps pity.
It is better than loathing.
It can feel good.

Anger can be productive.
It can motivate.
It can compensate,
And cover insecurity.

Mostly it destroys.
Shiva rises and
Clears the path
Through the waste of failure.

Anger operates at
An instinctual level.
Grow and forgive.
Breathe and live!

A FRIDAY POEM FROM RHYTHMS AND CYCLES – “The Future is Now”

July 18, 2014 Leave a comment

Rosemary’s Exploration, posted today on her blog (look for it here next Wednesday), is about choice, about choosing our family, our life, our Truth. It’s about rewriting our stories the way we want them to be lived and told.

I came across this poem before I read her article; they seem to go together. All time is NOW. When we live in the present every moment is a moment of our choosing. Dream into your own reality!

The Future is Now

If the future is now
Dreams are now.
This is Dream Time.

And is the past now?
Forgiveness is now.
This is the lesson.

Now is only now,
Past time, Dream Time,
All one now.

MONDAY’S POEM: It is What it is

June 23, 2014 Leave a comment

I am an Enneagram Type 1. This type is sometimes labeled “The Perfectionist.” Anger is often the first emotional response of a Type 1 person. In the Chinese and Taoist approach to “labeling” people they offer a “five-element” system. I am predominantly a “wood-type” person. Anger is often the first emotional response of a Wood-type person. Yes, I have been known to feel and display anger. But what’s the knowing that can be revealed by these systems that point at me with the same label?

My spiritual path coming out of this introspective approach and the tools I use for self-knowing is acceptance. As a perfectionist I need to accept the way things are. As I wood-type I need to learn to be flexible (like a tree bending with the wind). Acceptance, forgiveness, patience and letting go are the key words that I pull into me and work with toward resonance.

It is within this spirit of resonance that I wrote today’s poem:

It is What it is

Acceptance, letting go, realizing
It is what it is.
This is no easy row to hoe,
And yet it is the only path home.

Breath, inhaling deeply, noticing
What is, this natural state.
Open posture, belly breath
And relaxing on this path home.

Choice, accepting, admitting
There are options, nothing’s fixed.
Relaxed, deeply at peace
And knowing this is the path home.
